Amal, Omar and her son Ahmad are a happy family, of arab origin, living in Germany. One day, they visit a playground and meet a man named Franz. However, the situtation suddenly gets out of control when Franz insults attacks Amal because of her headscarf. A court case is initiated, but during one of the hearings, an incident occurs that completely changes the familie’s life.

As part of the event series Kino 24: German Films in Türkiye by the Goethe-Institut, the film Es brennt (It’s burning) (2023) by Cultural Academy Fellow Erol Afşin will be shown in Gaziantep and İzmir in November 2024.

Es brennt (It’s burning) (2023) is Erol Afşin’s feature-lenght film debut. The film premiered at the Munich Film Festival in 2023 and was nominated in the categories of “Best Director,” “Best Screenplay,” and “Best Production.”

Erol Afşin is a resident at the Tarabya Cultural Academy from October 2024 to January 2025.
